Why shouldn’t Yamaha offer an “everyman’s” 2-stroke sled? The demand for one is there from Yamaha fans, dealers would love it and Arctic Cat’s 600 2-stroke technology is time-proven and extremely good.As usual, it stirred up the pool of Yamaha fanatics who are still offended that Yamaha builds sleds on Arctic Cat’s ProCross chassis. One reader commented: “Arctic Cat is hardly even using Yamaha engines anymore”. This is partially but not completely true. As time has moved forward the two companies are seeing that Yamaha’s unique gifting is in designing and marketing 4-strokes and Arctic Cat’s is in doing the same with 2-strokes.
Furthermore, it looks like there hasn’t been and won’t be much cross over of buying habits between Yamaha and Cat riders – both will continue to buy the brands they distinctively love.

There are some facts Yamaha riders need to understand about this melding of the two companies. First, Yamaha hasn’t been involved with Arctic Cat in a vacuum.
Arctic Cat Inc. on June 11 announced that it has entered into an agreement to transition its snowmobile engine manufacturing from Suzuki Motor Corporation. Arctic Cat will begin manufacturing some of its own snowmobile engines in St. Cloud, Minn., after the 2014 model year. Currently, Suzuki supplies all engines for Arctic Cat’s snowmobiles. Suzuki will continue to supply the company with engine parts to service existing engines after the 2014 model year.Arctic Cat’s chairman and chief executive officer, Christopher A. Twomey, stated: ”Suzuki has been an outstanding engine supply partner for more than 25 years and remains a significant shareholder in Arctic Cat. However, we are changing our engine strategy in order to gain more control over our products, and enhance our ability to meet regulatory and performance requirements. This also will enable us to better utilize our current engine manufacturing capacity, resulting in potentially better costs.”
The 56,000-square-foot plant is located on 15 acres and currently employees 41 people. At this time, the company plans to use existing plant capacity and personnel during the transition. Arctic Cat expects snowmobile engine production to begin in St. Cloud in fiscal 2015.
Polaris is more reliable as a brand and normally offers sleds of higher quality than Arctic Cat. Polaris also has a wider range of vehicles to choose from. So, in our humble opinion, Polaris wins this one.It really depends on what you’re looking for and what you need a snowmobile for. Ski-Doo sleds are wider than Polaris vehicles, so the latter glide better through the snow. However, both a Ski-Doo and a Polaris will allow you to work the edges using your legs for leverage.

We pitched to and fro with little control and the unpredictability of a dented ping-pong ball.Most of us had fun driving the machine in the ways that matter most. It was light, nimble and quick. The powerband was strong and wide. Throttle response was immediate. Overall ergos were comfortable, with special kudos to the handlebars.
Did Arctic Cat use Kawasaki engines?
Cat never used a liquid Kawasaki engine in their consumer sleds.
We’ve heard rumors that the Arctic Cat F7s with the ACT Diamond Drive, like our model, just don’t have the same speed and acceleration throughout the powerband. Our unscientific test (lining our machine up with a chaincase-equipped F7) proved the rumors correct — but only by a sled-length.
The light, pitchy feel isn’t for everyone. A Yamaha rider tried it for about 10 minutes and then said, “People really like this thing?” He liked the heavier, more connected-to-the-ground feel his four-stroke offered, and quickly returned the Arctic Cat F7 to its original driver.
We tried to restore the machine to its “Z” sled glory by ordering a new hood and graphics, but it was such a hassle to get the special stickers that we gave up. It was probably akin to a real retro rider looking for a vintage hood. Too bad Haydays was over for the year. We ended up stitching it together with black zip-ties and went from Retro Cool to Herman Munster.
The rear skid is the FasTrack Long Travel sliderail with Arctic Cat’s IFP gas shocks. Up front, it’s the AWS VI with Cat’s IFPs and adjustable preload springs.
The suspension works great in smooth conditions, and the skis and track stays on the ground. That’s not impressive; it’s a minimum requirement for any snowmobile.

The move to build its own engines means that Arctic Cat should be better positioned to respond to market changes more quickly. The lead time to get a new motor built and into a new product will be much more direct, allowing Arctic Cat faster response time to meet dealer and customer demands.Because Suzuki’s Spirit motors didn’t always compare directly to the competition’s engine sizing, Arctic Cat preferred to discuss its engine performance in terms of either high or low power rather than cubic centimeters. The Spirit series was offered in the 5000 (500cc), 4000 (440cc), 3000 (340cc) and 2000 (275cc) designations.
He further stated, “…We’ll be able to control our own destiny. If there are specific snowmobile engines, certain directions we want to go, … (we) have the flexibility to produce and manufacture those engines.”
The Suzuki engines created a bit of a stir among racing organizations, as they did not adhere to the standard displacement classifications. Instead of the then-accepted 250-340-440 engine size categories, the Spirit engines premiered in “odd” size lots, such as the Pantera’s 500cc displacement twin. The new thinking revolved around trail performance and not necessarily racetrack needs. The Suzuki Spirit 5000 engine used a longer stroke than a conventional 440cc motor and, so the thinking went, the engine could run about 1,500 to 2,000 rpm slower but give similar performance to competitive 440s. The new ideas destined for the Pantera, a sporty trail runner, included improvements in low end torque, resulting in better power at low speeds in deep snow, lower clutch engagements for smoother drive-off, longer engine life and less engine noise.
While Suzuki no longer will hold a financial stake in Arctic Cat nor seat a Suzuki representative on the company’s board of directors, the long time relationship will continue through the 2014 Arctic Cat model year. Suzuki also will supply engine parts to service existing Suzuki-built motors.
