(Khamsa means ”five” in Arabic.)
Black diamonds have high densities of opaque mineral inclusions, particularly graphite — a dark gray form of carbon with a hexagonal structure, unlike diamond, which is a form of carbon in a tetrahedral shape — and metal sulfides, said Peter Heaney, a geoscience professor at Penn State and a black-diamond expert.

During this time, the two countries were part of the same supercontinent known as Rodinia, exactly how and where the diamonds formed is still unclear.
Because the Enigma has been cut, it is also much harder to be able to tell how it may have originated, Ketcham said. ”The outer surfaces of carbonados likely have clues bearing on their origin, which are now probably lost,” in the Enigma, he added. The auction house’s claim that the Enigma came from space, therefore, seems dubious.Regardless of how the diamond came into existence, Heaney hopes that whoever ends up buying the Enigma will put it on public display rather than hiding it away in a private collection. ”Many great diamonds have not seen the light of day for decades,” Heaney said. ”Museums cannot compete with billionaires for the purchase of natural wonders.”
The Enigma has been artificially cut to weigh exactly 555.55 carats (111 grams) and has 55 black facets. It is currently the largest cut black diamond in the world, according to Guinness World Records.
One lucky millionaire, or billionaire, will soon be able to get their hands on a one-of-a-kind black diamond, known as the ”Enigma,” when the shadowy gem goes up for auction next month. But they might not be getting exactly what they paid for.Auction house Sotheby’s unveiled the unique gemstone in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Jan. 17. The diamond will also be displayed in Los Angeles before arriving in London to be auctioned on Feb. 3. Sotheby’s estimates the Enigma will eventually sell for at least $6.8 million. Cryptocurrency bids will also be accepted by the auction house.
Sotheby’s describes the Enigma as a carbonado diamond, a Portuguese name given to black diamonds in the 19th century. However, ”not all black diamonds are carbonados,” Heaney told Live Science. Rather, a carbonado is a type of black diamond that is both polycrystalline, meaning multiple crystals fused into a single gem, and porous, Heaney said. Carbonado diamonds also contain uranium-rich phosphates, which generate ”radiation halos” around the pores, or holes, on their surfaces. This trait makes them highly absorptive of white light, making them completely opaque and much darker than other black diamonds, Heaney said.
”Carbonados are superhard and supertough,” due to their polycrystalline and porous properties, Heaney said. This makes them perfect for industrial use, such as drill bits used in the oil industry for penetrating hard igneous rocks, he added.
In addition to the diamond’s unusual color and unique weight and shape, one of the main selling points is that it may have originated from space. According to a statement from Sotheby’s, the Enigma is ”thought to have been created either from a meteoric impact or having actually emerged from a diamond-bearing asteroid that collided with Earth.” However, black-diamond experts have told Live Science that they are skeptical of the company’s claim and said the gemstone probably originated on Earth.
After searching for a definitive origin of carbonados for close to a decade, Heaney has come up ”empty-handed” and, as a result, believes that more research is needed. ”I am not persuaded that anyone has fully answered the question,” he said.

And the first shaft section and pull them away from each other. The pole snaps into place with the slide lock. Here you’ll see a locked icon on the pole.
It is possible that carbonados do have an extraterrestrial origin, as the auction house claims. Scientists have found black diamonds created from the impacts of meteorites in the past, but these diamonds are normally very small, which makes it an unlikely origin for true carbonados as large as the Enigma, Heaney said. ”I would be quite surprised if a diamond that large originated from a meteorite impact,” he said.Considering its large size, the Enigma is most likely a true carbonado, Heaney said. After looking at magnified images on his computer, he believes the Enigma is pitted (meaning it is porous), which is suggestive of a carbonado, but it is hard to tell for sure because the diamond has been cut. It is also hard to tell from the images if the diamond is truly opaque, he added.
”I believe the chances of carbonado specimens we’ve studied and seen data for being from outer space are low,” Richard Ketcham, a geoscientist at the University of Texas at Austin, who has also studied black diamonds, told Live Science. The idea of carbonados originating from space is the ”minority viewpoint among those who study them,” he added.Instead, Heaney and Ketcham believe the most likely origin of carbonados is here on Earth. However, the exact mechanism that forms these black diamonds isn’t yet clear. Most diamonds form when high pressures in Earth’s middle layer, or mantle, crush organic carbon. But the oldest carbonados potentially predate life on Earth — and, therefore, organic carbon — which makes it unlikely that they formed this way.

Is black diamond heavy?
Most black diamonds on the market weigh under a carat. A one carat black diamond is slightly smaller than a one carat white diamond. This is because black diamonds are denser (heavier) than white diamonds. As with other diamonds, the larger the carat size of a natural black diamond, the more rare and expensive it is.

How much does carbon fiber weight per cubic centimeter?
Because the fibers are entirely carbon, their density is only about 1.6 grams per cubic centimeter (g/ cc), comparable to the density of table sugar, resulting in carbon laminates with densities of around 1.3 to 1.5 g/cc.

This pole locks into its extended position by simply pulling the pole sections apart. From there, a push-button snaps into place, preventing the pole from collapsing. A plastic lever lock then allows 8 inches (20cm) of length adjustment. We prefer this type of combination design for most uses, which provides a light weight with plenty of adjustment potential. For the ultralight crowd, this adjustment is unnecessarily heavy, while other users might want more adjustability — especially those newer to using trekking poles. The lever lock can be tightened with a screwdriver and works well.
The Distance Carbon FLZ is light, packable, and useful for a variety of activities. The only difference between this pole and the barebones, unadjustable carbon poles on the market is a small amount of length adjustment.
We found these poles to be relatively versatile, exceeding our initial expectations. They are great for the most lightweight pursuits and are also good for light hiking and ultralight backpacking. They are even compatible with snow baskets for early summer snow and glacier travel. We would, however, reach for heavier and more durable poles for extended backpacking trips, rugged cross-country travel, and international treks. These poles come with both rubber and carbide metal tips for different rock and trail types. The Carbon FLZ weighs 13.4 ounces per pair, making it one of the lightest poles on the market. A minimalistic foam grip, narrow wrist straps, full carbon shaft construction, and tiny trail baskets all help shave grams off the overall weight. These poles are designed for users who are concerned primarily with keeping weight to a minimum, like mountain runners and advanced alpine climbers. If you are looking for a robust cork grip and ultra-comfortable wrist straps, look elsewhere, and be prepared to accept a higher weight. The only area where these poles add weight (compared to the lightest competitors) is in the adjustability realm, allowing for 8 inches (20cm) of length change. This capability adds 3 ounces of weight. The Carbon FLZ features a foam handle with a ribbed grip area for extra friction. Foam is a good grip material for hot weather and fast travel because it absorbs sweat better than other materials. The grip continues down the shaft past the normal palm placement, allowing users to choke up when crossing loose and steep hillsides. However, when choking up, only half of the hand is on foam, and the other half rubs against the lever lock mechanism. This works, but it’s not as comfortable as other options. The grip is minimally contoured, and the thin wrist strap is not as comfortable as other straps. These poles are expensive, but for those who want the lightest adjustable length pole, the price is justified. If you value a light weight above all other factors, yet want some length adjustability, these are the ticket. On top of that, Black Diamond has a great warranty program to protect your investment. If you don’t care about saving a few ounces, and prefer to save money instead, you will find plenty of high-performance options at lower prices. For the ultralight crowd, there are few better pole options than the Distance Carbon FLZ. They feature a lightweight carbon construction and 8 inches of length adjustability in a 13.4-ounce package. There are lighter options, but none of those offer any length adjustment, meaning that the Carbon FLZ fills a niche for the uncommon user who wants both lightweight performance and adjustability. These are great for mountain runners, climbers, and ultralight backpackers, but the extra three ounces might be a dealbreaker for ultralight users.
The Distance Carbon FLZ packs down to a tiny 15 inches in length, thanks to its foldable design. This is small enough to fit onto the outside of a backpack or inside the main compartment, which is critical when using your hands to move over scrambling terrain or when carrying up and over a multi-pitch climb. This short length is also a nice attribute for poles that will be packed into luggage for air travel or long road trips.
GearLab is founded on the principle of honest, objective, reviews. Our experts test thousands of products each year using thoughtful test plans that bring out key performance differences between competing products. And, to assure complete independence, we buy all the products we test ourselves. No cherry-picked units sent by manufacturers. No sponsored content. No ads. Just real, honest, side-by-side testing and comparison.Carbon fiber poles are usually less durable than their aluminum counterparts because aluminum doesn’t snap, chip, or crack as easily. That said, we had no problems with the Carbon FLZ during our testing. Over time, the joints between the pole sections may begin to wear down and crack or chip, and these poles won’t stand up to heavy abuse in boulder fields or being dragged along rocks while strapped to the sides of a backpack. But for their intended use in the hands of mountain runners and ultralight backpackers, durability shouldn’t be an issue. The same users generally prioritize lightweight construction over durable, heavy materials anyway. In general, this grip design is less comfortable than a robust cork grip, which we tend to prefer. However, we understand the design of this handle because of the major weight savings it provides. We didn’t like to use this grip when carrying a heavy backpack, but for most on-trail use, the comfort is just fine. There is a small secondary grip extension, but it isn’t useful for choking up on the pole because it is only 2.5 inches long. The wrist strap is made of a thin fabric that is also comfortable. Overall, we find the comfort to be adequate for a pole that is designed with weight and affordability in mind.
How much does carbon flz weigh?
13.4 ounces per pair The Carbon FLZ weighs 13.4 ounces per pair, making it one of the lightest poles on the market.
A handful of users like to constantly adjust the length of their trekking poles to match the terrain. The majority of hikers and trekkers don’t mind as much and just deal with the length of their poles as the terrain changes. If you’re one of the majority, or you are new to using trekking poles, you won’t mind the lack of length adjustment found in these fixed-length poles. That said, if you want the option, look elsewhere.
The Distance Z is a foldable pole with no possibility of length extension. The benefits of this design are weight savings and affordability, but it also requires users to size the pole correctly at the time of purchase. It comes in four different sizes in 4-inch (10 cm) increments. The pole is unfolded and locked into its extended configuration with a satisfying click, and to release this lock, an ergonomic spring-loaded button is pressed, releasing the extension lock. This button is easy to press, even with gloved hands.
Despite the lightweight construction (12.5 ounces for the 110 cm size) and noticeably lighter-than-average swing weight, our testers were surprised by the durability of the Distance Z. For its first field test, we took it on a six-day mountaineering adventure that was nearly entirely on cross-country terrain. Two other poles broke, but the Distance Z handled it fantastically. Still, these poles aren’t as tough as many of the heavier aluminum telescoping poles, but we think they’re plenty durable for all but the hardest users with the biggest backpacks.Aluminum is more durable than carbon fiber because it can bend without snapping. It also resists chipping and cracking, problems that can plague carbon poles and cause catastrophic failures. The carbide tip and reinforced lower shaft above the mud basket reduces wear in the usual areas. The Distance Z aluminum poles are continually durable enough for everything we’ve thrown at them thus far.
These are light enough for most uses, including long-distance thru-hiking — only alpine climbers or the fastest mountain runners will want to splurge for more weight savings. For 99 percent of users, these poles provide the best weight-per-dollar ratio of any pole we have ever tested. Usually, lower weights and prices mean a sacrifice in durability was made somewhere along the line, but in this case, we couldn’t find one.
The Distance Z features Black Diamond’s ultralight trekking pole grip, which is constructed from soft, lightweight foam. It has a small amount of contouring to fit most hand sizes and easily compresses to fit the shape of each unique user. It also offers ribbed cutouts that shave weight, allow airflow to the palm, and provide some added friction. The Distance Z scores in the middle of the pack amongst the best poles on the market. While it isn’t adjustable, or nearly as comfortable or featured as other poles out there, it offers lightweight durability and packable strength at a reasonable price.
At 12.5 ounces per pair for the 110 cm length, the Distance Z is one of the lightest poles on the market and feels shockingly lightweight in the hands. It’s not quite as light as the carbon fiber version, but shaving those extra 2 ounces will double the cost of your poles. Lighter poles have less swing weight, which is the effort required to swing the pole forward with each step. And over time, that extra weight adds up for mountain runners and speed hikers.
These are excellent poles for most hikers, runners, and climbers, delivering lightweight performance and durability for an affordable price. There are cheaper options out there, but none provide such high-end features as the Distance Z, earning our nod for the best value in a lightweight pole. Only the most specialized users will need a more specific pole — these are a great option for 90% of users looking for a high-performance pole at a great price.
How much does the black diamond distance Z carbon weigh?
12.5 ounces per pair Weight. At 12.5 ounces per pair for the 110 cm length, the Distance Z is one of the lightest poles on the market and feels shockingly lightweight in the hands.
Overall, we were surprised by the versatility of these poles. Upon first glance, it seems like they are designed purely for mountain running and lightweight hiking, but they are actually perfect for most applications. We prefer them over other poles for everything except heavy-duty backpacking and trekking to remote destinations.
Why are black diamonds so cheap?
Black diamonds, however are more affordable than other white or coloured diamonds, in large due to the fact that they are less in demand. They are also completely opaque and cannot be graded according to their colour intensity as they are only found naturally in one colour – fancy black.
The Distance Z is great for most uses, but trekkers on the gnarliest trails and carrying the most weight will want to use a slightly thicker and more durable pole. For everything else, the Distance Z is great. They come with a small snow basket that provides some floatation in summer snow, but these baskets are not wide enough for winter powder snow. The standard carbide tips are excellent, and the included rubber tips are perfect for gripping sandstone and pavement while leaving no trace on delicate sandstone trails.Foldable construction results in the smallest packed size but also eliminates any overlap in pole sections, increasing the tendency of a pole to wobble or bend when weighted. Considering that these poles are designed for lighter uses, they will serve most activities well, although larger folks and those carrying big backpacks might want to choose a heavier telescoping pole. Along with all the other foldable poles we tested, the Distance Z also outperforms traditional telescoping poles in the packed size category. These poles are great for any application when you might need to stow them on your backpack, such as moderate alpine climbing or technical scrambling. They also disappear into packed luggage when traveling. The Distance Z collapses down to a best-in-class 14 inches (35 cm) at the 110-centimeter length. The shortest length option, 100 centimeters, packs down to a minuscule 13 inches (33 centimeters) long. Extruded activated carbon combines powdered activated carbon with a binder, which are fused together and extruded into a fixed shape activated carbon block. The block may also include specialty adsorbents such as zeolites or oxidizing filtration media for specific applications. Extruded activated carbon is mainly used for water treatment and gas phase applications because of its low pressure drop, high mechanical strength and low dust content. A common application is in point-of-use cartridge filters.Absorption: a process in which molecules are taken up by a liquid or solid and distributed throughout the body of the liquid or solid, and usually associated with media swelling. Activated carbons do not absorb other materials (impurities).Craig Brown has over 44 years of experience in the water treatment industry. His areas of expertise include the design of large and small custom engineered water treatment systems, developing standardized unit process design processes, technical equipment presentations and training classes on various water treatment equipment unit processes. He is a graduate from the University of Wisconsin Madison.
Food & Beverage: The Food & Beverage industry uses activated carbon as part of various processes, such as the decolorization of sugar, purifying organic compounds, chlorine removal, purifying CO2, decaffeination and many other practices.
The increased surface area of activated carbon makes the material suitable for adsorption, a process by which impurities in liquids, vapors or gases are removed. Contaminant molecules are held within the carbon’s internal pore structure by electrostatic attraction or, if the base activated carbon has been impregnated, by chemisorption (chemical adsorption). The adsorption process helps carbon remove harmful materials (usually organic compounds), and certain types of activated carbon can also initiate chemical reactions, and/or act as carriers of biomass and chemicals.Adsorption: a process in which molecules or atoms are physically attracted to and concentrated on an internal surface by chemical or electrostatic (physical) forces, or both.

Iodine Number: the amount (milligrams) of Iodine adsorbed by one gram of carbon at equilibrium with a 0.02N Iodine concentration filtrate. Iodine Number is often reported in mg/g (typical range 500–1,200 mg/g). It is best understood as an indicator of total pore volume. Iodine Number is the standard measure for liquid phase applications.
Chemisorption (chemical adsorption): the binding of an adsorbate to the surface of a solid involving a chemical reaction between the surface and the adsorbate. New chemical bonds are generated at the adsorbant surface. Examples include macroscopic phenomena that can be very obvious, like corrosion, and subtler effects associated with heterogeneous catalysis. The strong interaction between the adsorbate and the substrate surface creates new types of electronic bonds. In an example of organics removal, an organic compound first adsorbs to the carbon’s internal surface/ adsorption pore and then can react with an impregnant in the carbon to either form a more adsorbable species or a species that is less toxic and can exit the bed along with the process stream.
Water Treatment: The biggest application of activated carbon is in the purification of water and potable water treatment. It is used in a variety of water treatment industries, from municipal water supply treatment, wastewater treatment, swimming pools, aquariums and even home filtration systems.
pH Stabilized Carbon: Most activated carbon products produce an initial effluent with a pH greater than 7. The actual rise in pH depends on several factors such as surface charges on the activated carbon, the ash content of the starting material, total dissolved solids (TDS) of the influent water, the buffering capacity of the influent water, and pH of the influent water. Historically, the initial pH rise was thought to be due to the ash content of the activated carbon. However, recent studies have shown that acid washing alone is not normally sufficient to eliminate initially high effluent pH values. The primary mechanism for the initial pH rise is now believed to be due to positively charged sites on the carbon formed during the activation process. These sites appear to exchange anions from the feed water, thus raising the pH. The solution to the pH rise problem is through a controlled oxidation of the activated carbon surface which inhibits the ion exchange phenomenon and stabilizes the effluent pH. pH stabilized carbon is used to reduce the potential pH spike (magnitude and duration) that can occur when a fresh carbon bed is brought online. The carbon will have an added specification of a maximum ‘modified contact pH’ to show it is a pH stabilized product.
Catalytic Carbon: In general, any activated carbon product has some catalytic activity due to the presence of a small number of chemical functionalities present on the corners of its graphitic basal plane. To enhance the catalytic activity of carbon, the surface is modified by a chemical or other process in which the electronic structure of the carbon is altered in such a manner that the resulting carbon offers enhanced catalytic capability. As a result, the catalytic carbon (also known as “surface modified” carbon) produced by this method is not only rich in chemisorption, but also physisorption capacity. Catalytic carbon is much more effective in removing chloramines than standard carbon. One test showed a 5X capacity to chloramine breakthrough over standard activated carbon, when operating at the same conditions.Air Purification: Activated carbon is used to control potentially harmful, environmentally damaging or unpleasant odors in a number of environments, including homes, manufacturing facilities and in operating rooms.
Powdered activated carbon is commonly used as an “ingredient” in a reaction tank, where it is fed as a powder or slurry, to react with the contaminants in the process fluid. It is also used for treating air, as in a gas mask and similar applications.
Extruded Activated Carbon (EAC): combines powdered activated carbon and a binder, which are fused together and extruded into a cylindrical shaped activated carbon block with diameters from 0.8 to 130 mm. These are mainly used for gas phase applications because of their low pressure drop, high mechanical strength and low dust content. Granular activated carbon is the media of choice for fixed bed water treatment systems, as it exhibits the best mix of surface area (e.g., particle size) and pressure drop. Activated carbon is produced from carbonaceous source materials such as nutshells, coconut shell, coir (coconut shell fibers), peat, wood, lignite, bituminous coal, and petroleum pitch. Industrial: Activated carbon is used as a catalyst for many industrial applications; gas processing, gas storage and delivery, gold recovery, pharmaceutical purification and many other practices. Activated carbon is a form of graphite that has been processed to create millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. This increases the surface area to as much as 300-2,000 m2/g. Apparent Density: usually measured in g/ cm3 (g/ml) or pounds per cubic foot. Apparent Density is used to determine the weight of a fixed volume of activated carbon. The solid or skeletal density (e.g., if all pore spaces were removed) of activated carbons typically ranges between 2.0 and 2.1 g/cm3 (125-130 lbs/ft3). However, a large part of an activated carbon sample consists of void space within and between particles, and the actual operating (apparent) density is therefore lower, typically 0.4 to 0.5 g/cm3 (25-31 lbs/ ft3). Higher apparent density provides greater volume activity and normally indicates better-quality activated carbon when comparing the same source material. It can also indicate different starting materials (such as bituminous coal vs. lignite coal vs. wood). Granular Activated Carbon (GAC): is an activated carbon with the majority of the particles above a certain size, 50-mesh sieve (0.297 mm) [per AWWA (1992) B604] or 80-mesh sieve (0.177 mm) [per ASTM] and larger.

Granular activated carbon has a relatively larger particle size compared to powdered activated carbon and consequently, presents a smaller external surface. Diffusion of the adsorbate into the interior pore surfaces is thus an important factor. Since the rate of diffusion is related to particle size, the smaller the carbon particle or mesh size,
the faster the adsorption (e.g., less contact time is needed). Granulated carbons are used for water treatment, deodorization and separation of components of a flow system, and are also used in rapid mix basins. GAC is designated by sizes such as 8×20, 20×40, or 8×30 and 12×40 for liquid phase applications and 4×6, 4×8 or 4×10 for vapor phase applications. The most popular aqueous phase carbons are the 12×40 and 8×30 sizes because they have a good balance of size, surface area, and head loss characteristics.Medical: Activated carbon can be found in almost every hospital, clinic or doctor’s office in the world. It is used to as a poison treatment, odor control, filtration, in respiration masks and wound dressing just to name a few applications.
Acid Washed Carbon: Activated carbon contains varying amounts of ash, depending on the source material and processing. Acid washing will remove or leach off most of the acid soluble ash and metals content before placing the carbon into an acidic stream applications. The degree of acid washing is usually indicated by an acid soluble ash and/ or acid soluble iron (indicative of all the metals) specification for the product. Acid washing may reduce the rinse volume needed to reduce the effluent pH to an acceptable level. However, acid washing alone is not normally sufficient to eliminate initially high effluent pH values.
How much does activated carbon weigh?
Apparent Density: usually measured in g/ cm3 (g/ml) or pounds per cubic foot. Apparent Density is used to determine the weight of a fixed volume of activated carbon. The solid or skeletal density (e.g., if all pore spaces were removed) of activated carbons typically ranges between 2.0 and 2.1 g/cm3 (125-130 lbs/ft3).
Each particle in this image, despite being only around 0.1 mm across, has a surface area of several square meters. Traditionally, powdered activated carbons are made in particulate form as powders or fine granules. Thus they present a large surface to volume ratio with a small diffusion distance. PAC is not commonly used in a dedicated vessel, due to the high head loss that would occur. PAC is generally added directly to other process units, such as raw water intakes, rapid mix basins, clarifiers, and gravity filters. PAC must be removed by mechanical filtration if undesirable in the downstream process.
How do you lock black diamond distance on FLZ poles?
Yeah I’ll show you how it’s done so first off you just unclip it again now you just let a gang down below like that grab your top section up here you just pull it down until you hear a click so once
An investment diamond is one that will rise in value over the years as their supply deteriorates and demand for them continues to rise. However, despite their rarity, black diamonds are not in very high demand at this stage and one would only be considered an investment item if it was considerably large or had a distinctive feature that would make it very desirable to investors in the market.
Black diamonds, like normal colourless diamonds, are formed by high pressure on the element carbon under the surface of the earth that produces a repetitive geometric pattern in the crystal lattice. The exceptional colour formation in black diamonds is caused by graphite inclusions and random clustering throughout and it is even believed that some black diamonds fell to the earth as meteorites, adding to their mystic appeal. Black diamonds are not transparent and do not display fire in the way that colourless and other coloured diamond do, but can still be incredibly impressive. Black diamonds may show white or gray inclusions that make them very unique. Due to the crystal structure, a black diamond will actually absorb most of the light that enters it. Rough natural black diamonds are found in very few locations, including Brazil and Central America.
Because of the fact that black diamonds are so rare, some diamond specialists have begun artificially enhancing low quality colourless diamonds by burning them in the rough state until they display the same opaque black colour of a natural black diamond. Artificially enhanced black diamonds are of course much more affordable than natural black diamonds, but they are not certified or recognised as true black diamonds by the GIA. In general, buyers prefer natural fancy black diamonds – the real thing which is still affordable.
The most famous black diamond is the 67.50 carat Black Orlov – a cushion-cut brooch surrounded by a halo of 108 colourless diamonds, hanging from a necklace that’s adorned with a further 124 diamonds. At 312.24 carats the Spirit of de Grisogono is the world’s largest black diamond, and world’s 5th largest diamond. A formidable ring in a unique, mesmerising white gold mounting, it is set with 702 white diamonds weighing a total of 36.69 carats. This diamond originally had a rough weight of 587 carats and was mined in the nineties in west Central Africa. It was later brought to Switzerland, where it was cut by Fawaz Gruosi using the traditional Mogul diamond cutting technique. There is no information on the whereabouts of the precious stone or the identity of its current owner, although it is thought to have been sold onto a private client. What is the opposite of a brilliant white diamond that reflects light and sparkles brilliantly with every move you make? A light-absorbing, captivating black diamond of course. Natural black diamonds are considered fancy colour diamonds. Most naturals fancy colour diamonds are extremely valuable due to their rarity, with their price depending largely on the intensity of their colour. Black diamonds, however are more affordable than other white or coloured diamonds, in large due to the fact that they are less in demand. They are also completely opaque and cannot be graded according to their colour intensity as they are only found naturally in one colour – fancy black.
