Just don’t mention the fuel economy, or even the efficiency of the electric cars when driven in this manner.A twin-turbo V8 nicked from the Porsche Cayenne Turbo has been tuned to a stonking 657bhp in the Performante model. Select the sportier drive modes and you’ll be intoxicated by the noises coming out of the exhaust as you roar from 0 to 62mph in a scarcely believable 3.3 seconds.

Both the original X5 and X6 were pioneers in their own right. While the X5 showed BMW could make an SUV with surprisingly car-like handling, the X6 heralded the rise of the coupe-SUV class.The standard DBX borrows a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from Mercedes-AMG and in the DBX707 that same engine is tuned to a monstrous 697bhp. To handle the extra torque (all 900Nm of it), Aston has also fitted a new transmission featuring a wet clutch system and tuned the suspension for even sharper dynamics.The Model X’s brutal acceleration has been well-documented online with multiple videos of the all-electric SUV embarrassing supercars in drag races. The most wickedly powerful Plaid model will see 60mph come and go in 2.5 seconds – although if you regularly do this the 333-mile range drops dramatically.The Porsche Cayenne was the original uber-SUV, and if it wasn’t for the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari and Aston Martin arriving on the scene, it would still be the undisputed driver’s choice in the class today. A 0-62mph time of 3.3 seconds is supercar performance in anyone’s language and being a Porsche, the Cayenne Turbo GT can back its straight-line pace up with agility levels that belie its size.

As hard to pronounce as it is to catch, the Purosangue is the car that many Ferrari fans didn’t want to see built but thousands of Ferrari customers around the world were crying out for. Whatever your views on the prancing horse badge adorning the nose of an SUV, you can’t argue that Ferrari hasn’t done the job properly.The seats are highly comfortable, it’s as if wind- and road-noise has been snuffed out by goose-down pillows, and the Bowers and Wilkins hi-fi in our car basically turned the entire cabin into a pair of expensive noise-cancelling headphones.It doesn’t feel it, but the X7 is now mid-way through its life cycle having launched in 2019 and needs this refresh in order to keep it on-par with the new seventh-gen 7 Series. For those that didn’t like the looks of the original X7, then the bad news is you’re probably not going to like this one, either. BMW’s doubled-down on the controversy of its latest designs by complementing the ginormous grille with the headlight design and front apron from the 7 Series. Bold.

Despite the cushy ride, BMW engineers have targeted best-in-class dynamics – indeed, one chassis expert with a background in WTCC and DTM was quick to quash any fears that this would be BMW’s least dynamic car (and mumbled something about front-wheel-drive 2-series).The increased array of driver assistance systems is certainly worth a mention and includes a broader range of functions from the front-collision warning system, a new exit warning function (alerts occupants to a risk of collision when opening the door) and something called Manoeuvre Assistant.

A refreshed engine line-up is also on the menu (all featuring 48v mild-hybrid assistance), with the M50i xDrive being replaced by the M60i xDrive, as well as updated xDrive40i and xDrive40d versions. What’s more, while the seven-seat version of the X7 is still standard, buyers can choose to have a six-seat option with bigger, more comfortable seats in the second row.
Row three also includes Isofix child-seat mounting points – not all seven seaters do, which means child seats have to be locked into row two, with the knock-on that accessing row three is harder for other passengers. Not in the X7. So if you’ve got a young family and regularly carry more than five, the X7’s rear Isofix is a real bonus.It’s certainly a serene environment with two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers There’s a cushioned lull to suspension movements, but while this is very much a comfort-focussed experience, it never feels like you’re sloshing about because suspension movements are so nicely regulated. Admittedly, we haven’t yet tried the car on the new 23-inch alloys, but we suspect the ride will remain surprisingly polished.

155 MPH The 3L turbocharged six-cylinder motor along with the mild-hybrid system helps the 2022 BMW X7 0-60 MPH run in a pretty quick 5.8 seconds. The quick 2022 BMW X7 xDrive40i 0-60 time helps cover the quarter-mile mark in 14.4 seconds and has a top speed rated to be at 155 MPH.
Further visual tweaks include the ‘Iconic Glow’ ambient lighting around the grille and, wait for it, 23-inch alloy wheels – the largest factory spec rims that BMW has ever supplied. If that’s not your cup of tea then rest assured that the positively tiny 21-inch versions are standard. BMW’s made some tweaks at the rear end, with 3D sculpted lights and a full-width chrome bar that sits underneath a glass cover.Doing pretty much what it says on the tin, it’s especially useful if your parking space is in a tight parking garage. The function will memorise how to get into the spot and then, when the starting point is reached again, will repeat the manoeuvre by taking control of the steering, brakes, accelerator and forward and reverse gearshifts. Overkill? Maybe. But there’s no denying how effectiveness it is.

Row two tilts forward to provide access to row three. It’s a bit of a squeeze getting back there and out again, but there’s decent space for two full-size adults once seated, and even armrests, cupholders, heated seats and the option of air vents and a climate-control panel.
Inside, the X7 gets the same infotainment setup as the rest of the 7 family. That means a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel replacing traditional dials, as well as a 14.9-inch curved central screen that runs BMW’s latest iDrive operating system, 8.0. Predictably, it’s rather brilliant and while most users will take some time to get used to its myriad functions, the interface and quality of software design is superb.

For a car that’s easy to dislike on account of its sheer bulk and those frankly monstrous kidney grilles, there’s actually a lot to enjoy once you’re aboard the BMW X7, and there’s no doubt its mix of luxurious refinement, seven-seat versatility and dynamic ability is unmatched by any rivals for comparable money.
A more opulent six-seat layout is available, which switches the middle-row bench for a pair of captain’s chairs. Clearly, you’ll need to leave one passenger at the kerb and you lose the ability to fold row two completely flat and carry really big loads, but there’s more space and comfort for the two remaining, and the gap between the seats makes getting back to row three easier.

It does. Ground clearance of 221mm, all-wheel drive and air suspension that can be raised by up to 40mm should more than cope with most owners’ demands, but BMW is happy to leave the really serious terrain to Land Rover, barely mentions off-road capability in the press material and didn’t include any off-roading on the press launch.
It’s also telling that the xOffroad package is optional, with four off-road modes (the unnecessarily pre-fixed xSand, xRocks, xGravel and xSnow), mechanical diff lock and sump guard.Love or hate the looks, there’s no denying that the initial X7 was a very, very competent car, so what has this update done for its standing among rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Range Rover. Read on to find out…Chassis tuning was even conducted at the Nürburgring. Apparently the chassis engineers reached an impasse until someone suggested they changed tack from a conservative chassis set-up to one as agile as possible, with software for the all-wheel drive, steering, differential and suspension layered on to keep owners out of trouble. ‘It took two months but immediately it went five seconds faster at the Nürburgring,’ says our man. You’d certainly move out of its way on the touristfahrten days.

It can. The X7 comes as standard with seven seats. Row two can be moved forwards and back by up to 14.5cm so you can flex the ratio between space for those occupants, or for people or luggage behind. The seat backs also split 60/40 as standard.
With all three rows raised, the boot is smaller than a Golf’s at 326 litres (the electric split tailgate actually helps to stop the stuff you’ve crammed in falling out) but row two and three can electrically lowered at the press of a button, providing 750 litres and 2120 litres of space respectively.The BMW X7 is what you can get when you take a BMW 7 Series, swap out the saloon body for an SUV shell, add in a couple of seats and give it the kind of off-road ability that looks great in the brochure but will almost certainly never be tested in the real world. In other words, it’s the biggest, baddest SUV that BMW makes – and for 2023 it’s had a facelift.

Is BMW X7 twin-turbo?
They range from a 375-hp turbo-six to a 523-hp twin-turbo V-8, with the latter making 630 horses on the highest-class, max-performance Alpina XB7. All models have all-wheel drive and an adaptive air suspension system that promotes a pillow-like ride.
It goes well, too. Of the engines available post facelift, we’ve driven the top-dog M60i xDrive and it’s got all the guts you’d expect from a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. Brawny low down and reasonably keen to rev, its 530hp and 553lb ft torque output propel the 2.7-tonne X7 from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 250km/h. Sounds the part, too, with a M-Division rumble emanating from under the humongous bonnet.We didn’t drive it on the ’Ring, but some of the windier roads on our California test route (it’s a myth that American tarmac is all set in a straight line) the X7 performed with aplomb. The steering had a familiarly pacey, weighty and precise feel, and the X7 certainly turned in well, resisted roll, gripped hard and felt suitably rear-biased when driven more aggressively. It feels both far more dynamic than expected, and like a much smaller, nimbler machine that the proportions suggest.

Inside, the X7’s dashboard is dominated by a massive digital display that’s slightly curved. However, we were irritated by how slowly the power-operated, second-row captain’s chair moved when trying to let people in and out of the third row. Likewise, the way-back seats aren’t especially roomy for adults during prolonged drives. Still, no one will complain about the X7’s ample interior cubby storage. The 2023 X7 receives a mid-cycle refresh that includes a more expressive front end and a new dashboard design with a huge digital display and BMW’s latest infotainment system. The largest BMW SUV also has more standard features and new driver-assistance technology. For the first time, BMW will offer a set of 23-inch rims, too. The X7 also benefits from updated powertrains. The xDrive40i’s turbocharged six-cylinder now makes 375 horsepower (up 40) and up to 398 pound-feet of torque (up 67). The V-8 model’s name changes from M50i to M60i, and its new twin-turbo 4.4-liter and 48-volt hybrid system are claimed to form a more efficient duo. The range-topping Alpina XB7 has an even more powerful setup than the M60i that makes 630 horsepower–18 more than before.
The entry-level X7 xDrive40i is powered by a 375-hp turbocharged inline-six-cylinder, and the M60i has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that makes 523 horses. The Alpina XB7 has a specially tuned version of that V-8, which develops 630 horsepower. All three engines pair with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. At our test track, the racy-looking M60i model managed to hit 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds, but the xDrive40i wasn’t far behind, hitting the same speed in just 4.6 seconds. Every X7 rides on an air suspension with adaptive dampers, and the chassis can be further enhanced with the available rear-axle steering and active anti-roll bars that reduce body motions. Both features are standard on the M60i, which has a sportier suspension setup by default. Handling is surprisingly lithe for a large SUV and the X7’s steering is accurate and nicely weighted. The smallest wheels on the X7 measure 21 inches in diameter, but BMW now also offers 23 inchers for the first time; on the big rollers, though, the X7’s ride quality takes a hit.

Even with our fondness for the twin-turbo V-8’s horsepower and noteworthy performance, we’d recommend the X7 xDrive40i. It has desirable standard features that include four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, heated front seats, a power tailgate, and more. We’d also add one of the Vernasca leather upholstery choices and the Premium package that includes a head-up display, gesture controls, and soft-close doors.
The 2023 X7 is most efficient when it’s equipped with the standard inline-six. That xDrive40i model received EPA ratings of 21 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. Going with the V-8–powered M60i model will mean hitting the pump more often, as that model is rated for 16 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, the M60i we tested surprised us with a 23-mpg result. The system operates through a 14.9-inch touchscreen that’s housed in the curved glass panel atop the dash. Along with a Wi-Fi hotspot (subscription required), every X7 is available with BMW’s Digital Key which allows users to control vehicle functions remotely via a smartphone app. A more powerful Harman/Kardon stereo and wireless charging are optional features. When it comes to moving an affluent family, there’s no better BMW than the X7, the brand’s luxurious three-row SUV. While its cargo area and rearmost seats aren’t as spacious as rivals such as the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Mercedes-Benz GLS-class, the Bimmer boasts better driving manners as well as an impressive selection of engines. They range from a 375-hp turbo-six to a 523-hp twin-turbo V-8, with the latter making 630 horses on the highest-class, max-performance Alpina XB7. All models have all-wheel drive and an adaptive air suspension system that promotes a pillow-like ride. The 2023 X7’s interior is serene, but it’s also packed with upscale materials and modern tech such as the dash’s giant curved glass display. Modern engines have come a great distance in a very short amount of time. The combination of new technology and better components, such as, variable valve timing, Valvetronic, and forced induction result in better performance and increased fuel mileage as compared to the same displacement engines only a few years ago. One of the rapidly evolving components is the Engine Control Unit (ECU). Modern ECU’s contain new powerful processors. The processors’ performance is measured in megahertz allowing performance in millions of calculations per second.

Although manufacturing has become more precise there is still a large enough inconsistency from one engine to another affecting performance. It is simply the nature of manufacturing processes that some engines produce more power than others. We find that although our “off the shelf” calibrations will make sizable gains there is always room for improvement from a custom calibration. This becomes more important and beneficial the more modified an engine becomes.
When calibrating an engine, manufacturers consider all of the above-mentioned factors , which leads to a conservative end product. OEM calibrations must function in all environments and take in to account countless variables. This means they are restricted when it comes to performance. However, this also leaves great room for improvement when recalibrated in the aftermarket.Our performance calibrations will increase a stock engine’s performance. As a car is modified from its stock form, the benefit from remapping becomes increasingly important and more beneficial. As restrictions are removed by adding cold air intakes, exhausts, headers, cams, et cetera, the amount of potential airflow is increased; as a result, the torque curve shifts and the ignition angle, valve timing, and the fuel curve need adjustment. Our performance calibration will maximize the benefit of your aftermarket parts and maintain drivability.

At Epic Motorsports, we do not have OEM manufacturer restrictions. As a result, we are able to remap the engine calibration settings and focus more on output. This translates to better drivability, more power output, and often, better fuel economy.
All of these advances in performance and fuel mileage are running concurrently with stringent manufacturer emissions standards. These standards are very restrictive in nature; power output is greatly affected as a result. A single vehicle model will sell 100,000+ units worldwide and each unit must meet varying countries’ emission standards. In the US, the EPA requires manufacturers to cover specified major emission control components for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles. A manufacturer cannot risk their reputation or their bottom line if they sell a car that has difficulty passing post-sale emission testing. To meet required standards, a significant margin for error is built into the calibration, which leaves power on the table.Engine sensors are built to read within certain tolerances. As these sensors age they will often degrade and the reading sent to the ECU will vary slightly. Knowing this, manufacturers err on the conservative side to help avoid emission/warranty issues by building in a margin of error. In addition to building in flexibility for ailing sensors, manufacturers are also forced to consider other wear items either from lack of service or neglect. Old spark plugs, dirty air filters, low grade fuel accidently or intentionally run through the engine are all taken into consideration when calibrated by the manufacturer. As a proponent of performance you wouldn’t do such a thing, right?
