Let’s look at hard gel first. Despite what the name might suggest, hard gel is actually a softer and more flexible form of polish. That said, it also tends to be stronger, which might come as something of a surprise. It’s actually the flexibility that gives it the extra strength. You can think of it as being similar to a plastic cup getting dropped on the ground versus a glass cup being dropped. The plastic one is more flexible and will absorb the impact better. The glass, on the other hand, will shatter.
At the end of the day, choosing between hard gel and acrylic is a decision that needs to be made between yourself and your nail tech. You can, and should, look into the pros and cons of both. Your nail tech can answer any questions you have about which is most likely to be better for your nails. If you answer your nail tech’s questions about your nails and lifestyle honestly, you will be that much closer to getting it all sorted.
Shellac is a resin created by combining both nail gel and traditional polish. Therefore, people love shellac for its all-around nature: durability and that gorgeous, classic shine. While shellac offers almost every perk that hard gel offers, it is a bit more prone to chipping. Nevertheless, this shorter life span may be worth the easy removal: Rather than minutes of scraping and soaking your fingers in harsh chemicals (hard gel), shellac can be easily removed with an acetone polish remover–easy and painless.
Gel is, well, a gel, which is one of the major differences compared to shellac. It can come in a pre-shaped kit or in a pot. Hard gel can feel lighter on your fingers. Some people find that it bonds nicely to their natural nails and is less prone to chipping or breaking down compared to shellac. Just be sure to keep your gel-manicured nails out of hot water to keep them good for longer.Sometimes a girl (or guy, we don’t judge) just needs a little help with their nails. Maybe your natural nails aren’t sturdy enough to pull off the nail shape you’re dying to try, or maybe you just like the look of nail extensions. When it comes to these sorts of things, you have a couple options including hard gel and shellac. But which one should you use?
A lot of the choosing comes down to personal preference. Some people find that shellac extensions are best for them, while others enjoy hard gel more. In reality, it comes down to your priorities: If you’re looking for durability or color variety, you will probably want hard gel. Furthermore, hard gel is preferable for those with softer nails. On the other hand, if you are looking for a polish that is both sufficiently durable, but causes less damage to your nails upon removal, then shellac is probably the one for you. However, in the end, every person’s nails and lifestyles are unique. You may need to experiment with both to really know whether gel or shellac is the right choice for you.
The best option will depend on what your needs are and how well the product is applied. Builder gels are easier to apply and are less damaging to your natural nails than acrylics. However, acrylic nails can be used for more intricate designs and shapes.Acrylics are generally more expensive than builder gels as the application process for acrylics is more involved. The cost of either product will also depend on where you have them done and what type of product is used.
Acrylic nails are seen as better for nail art as they can be used to create more intricate designs and shapes. Acrylics are also stronger than builder gel, which makes them ideal for more complicated designs.
Overall, acrylics and builder gels are both great options for nail enhancements and repairs. With proper application and maintenance, either of these options can last up to 4-6 weeks. Ultimately, the best option will depend on your needs and preferences. It is important to ensure that you use a reputable nail technician and take good care of your nails after the treatment.Builder gel is a one-step system and can be used for both enhancements and repairs of the natural nail. It is applied directly over the natural nails, without any prepping needed. Builder gels come in a variety of colours and textures and are available in either thin or thick layers. Builder gel is incredibly strong, durable and flexible so they will maintain their shape and last up to 4-6 weeks before they need to be removed.

Furthermore, hard gel is preferable for those with softer nails. On the other hand, if you are looking for a polish that is both sufficiently durable, but causes less damage to your nails upon removal, then shellac is probably the one for you.
Acrylic nails are a two-step process, which is applied over natural nails after prepping the nail bed with primer and bonder. A liquid monomer is then combined with a polymer powder that forms a hard acrylic. Acrylic nails are incredibly strong and can last up to 4-6 weeks before needing to be removed. They come in a variety of colours, textures and designs and can be used for both enhancements and repairs.

This process can be repeated to create thicker layers if desired until you reach your desired shape and thickness. Finally, the nails are sealed with a top coat to protect them from chipping or peeling. Yes, if not removed carefully or applied incorrectly acrylic nails can be damaging to the natural nail. It is important to ensure that you use a reputable nail technician and take good care of your nails after the treatment. Acrylic nails start with prepping the nail bed with primer and bonder. This helps create an adhesive surface for the acrylic products to adhere to. Then, the liquid monomer is combined with a polymer powder and then brushed onto the nail. The acrylic is then cured under an LED or UV lamp until it hardens. This can be repeated to create thicker layers if desired until you reach your desired shape and thickness. Finally, a top coat of polish is applied for protection. Both builder gels and hard gels are used for nail enhancements, providing strength and shape to natural nails. They both require UV/LED light to cure, although the time needed for curing varies depending on the type of gel being used.
What is hard gel manicure?
”Hard gel is a self-leveling gel that cannot be soaked off with acetone and needs to be filed off,” explains manicurist Mar Y Sol Inzerillo. Like acrylic, it can be molded, shaped, and refilled, but it isn’t hardened by solvents.
When it comes to selecting a product for your nails, it’s important to consider all the potential benefits and risks that come with each type of gel. Taking time to research and consult with a professional nail technician will pay dividends in terms of how your nails look, the longevity of your manicure and the health of your nails.

Did you know? Long, artificial nails have become increasingly popular over the years. In fact, social media is filled with celebrities, such as Kendal Jenner and Gigi Hadid, showing off their latest colourful acrylics. However, a while ago, this trend was deemed “ghetto” because they were worn by black women. These women were criticised and ridiculed for their crazy manicures, but they continued to sport them as a way to express themselves.
Polygel can be applied as an overlay on your natural nails, or as a nail enhancement. It is still cured under a UV light, but it is a lot lighter than both gel and acrylic nails. It also has a much lighter fragrance, which is great for people that like the look of acrylics but can’t stand the smell! In terms of removing Polygel nails, the polish is buffed off rather than soaked off. However, the remaining polish can be soaked after if needed. Polygel is available in a range of colours, but gel polish can also be applied over the top if you fancy something different.
Although there are many positives to acrylic nails, such as length and longevity (they can last for up to 4 weeks), they can also have some damaging effects. The removal of acrylic nails can be somewhat time consuming, with them having to be soaked in acetone and then buffed off. As well as acetone making your nails dry and brittle, the buffing process can weaken your nails. This is something to think about when considering getting acrylic nails, plus once you start getting them you probably won’t want to stop!

Is builder gel less damaging than acrylic?
Builder gels are easier to apply and are less damaging to your natural nails than acrylics. However, acrylic nails can be used for more intricate designs and shapes.
Gel nails are different to acrylic nails as they are not an extension of your natural nails, instead they are a polish that can last for up to 2 weeks. Gel nail polish is applied similarly to that of a normal polish, but instead of leaving the polish to dry, it is cured under a UV light. The result is a glossy, chip free manicure! Gel nails don’t tend to damage your natural nails as much as acrylics, however they still do have some negative effects. Gel polish can be difficult to remove, and the process involves soaking your nails in acetone and buffing off the polish, which can make your nails weak and dry. We recommend that if you do like getting a regular gel mani, make sure to keep your hands and nails moisturised in between, to try and combat some of the effects.Polygel nails are a newcomer to the beauty industry, with many people questioning what makes them so different to the previous two options. Polygel is essentially the lovechild of acrylic and gel, combining both their good qualities but leaving out all the bad stuff (if only you could do that with men, eh.)
Is hard gel healthier than acrylic?
If applied and removed properly, gel extensions are very safe. ”They’re considered a healthier version of acrylics, especially because they don’t have the powder or harsh chemicals like methyl methacrylate and toluene,” says Seney.
Acrylic nails are an extension on your natural nail. In order for them to be applied, your natural nail bed is filed down to create a rough surface for the glue to be able to adhere the nail extension to. Once this is done, acrylic liquid and powder are mixed together to create the acrylic that is applied on top to mould the artificial nail. This will be shaped and buffed, and then painted with either regular or gel polish.
Is builder gel stronger than gel?
Builder gel in a bottle is a softer gel, but it creates a much stronger overlay on the nails than traditional gel nail polish so it’s great for helping your natural nails grow.
While society has since embraced this look, as like many other parts of black cultures, it’s important that we don’t forget where these popular trends come from and how black people have struggled when wearing their own heritage.

The builder gel can also be used on forms and tips to be used as a one bottle enhancement service.

Polygel nails are a hybrid between gel and acrylic manicures because they’re durable, long-lasting, yet still flexible. They can cause less damage to the natural nail than other gel manicures. Ahead, keep reading to learn more about this innovative manicure formula straight from a nail professional. Considering how much it costs to get your nails done, who doesn’t want a long-lasting manicure? But, if you’re someone who doesn’t love the bulkiness and process of getting an acrylic set and you’re worried about the chance of ruining your natural nails with a gel manicure, then polygel nails are your answer. Polygel is typically applied in one of two ways. Aaron says the formula comes in a tube that looks like toothpaste. This is applied directly onto the nail on top of a nail form. Then, it’s molded to the length and shape you desire. Or, a nail technician can have shapes formed into full tips, then pressed onto the natural nails and cured under a gel lamp.”With polygel, you can shape the nail for a longer time,” says Aaron. Acrylic dries and hardens very quickly after applying, so a nail tech needs to move quickly to get the shape and length you desire. ”Polygel hardens after you place it underneath the gel lamp.”
The average cost for a full set of polygel nails can range between $50 to $150. This price can vary considering the length and shape that a client chooses, explains Aaron.
Polygels can also be safer for your natural nails, as less breakage occurs as long as you’re taking care of your nails and carefully removing them when the time comes.A polygel manicure can last up to three weeks, but it depends on your lifestyle and how much wear and tear your nails experience daily. Ultimately, you can expect similar longevity to acrylic nails. The biggest similarities between acrylic and polygel nails are that they are a form of nail extensions, and they can get filled in when new growth appears. However, polygel nails are a bit easier to work with and shape and don’t require the use of monomer chemicals, like acrylics. On the other hand, traditional gel nails are thinner and can cause more damage to the natural nails than polygel. ”Gel polish on natural nails can bend the nails and cause breakage,” says Aaron.
If you’re someone who’s looking for a long-lasting and durable nail enhancement that isn’t as bulky as acrylic or thin as a gel, then polygels might be your new favorite thing.
Davis says gel extensions are only detrimental to nail health if not properly removed. ”Aprés are soft gel, so they completely soak-off like a regular gel manicure,” she explains, noting that intense buffing isn’t required. However, like regular gel nails, Davis does recommend getting gel extensions removed by a professional—preferably the one who applied them so that they know exactly which type of gel they’re removing so that damage is less of a possibility.
Top manicurists like Davis and Seney also rely on a newer method. ”It’s an already shaped full soft gel nail tip that you secure on the natural nail with gel,” explains Davis. They come in different sizes and shapes, like stiletto, round, coffin, and square. As it doesn’t need filling, it’s even quicker than the actual gel extension building. ”I recommend brands Kiara Sky Gelly Tips and Apres Gel X,” says Seney. For some people, gel extensions last two weeks; for others, they’ll last four to five, according to Davis. ”I suggest having a manicure every 12-16 days. You’ll have natural growth after that time,” she says.
Much like any other manicure look, the benefit of gel nails is personal. While they undoubtedly create more room for popular nail art, Davis reminds us that nails of all lengths can get in on that trend. ”The only nail art trend that works better on a clear gel extension is a ’jelly mani’ where the polish is sheer,” she notes. Therefore, in the end, Davis boils it down to one simple question: ”Do you want your nails long?” she asks. ”Get extensions.”
Davis warns that some salons have manicurists upselling their gel extensions when they’re really acrylic. ”Gel comes in a pot and looks thick like honey; acrylic is a powder. Know the difference,” she notes.
Chen AF, Chimento SM, Hu S, Sanchez M, Zaiac M, Tosti A. Nail damage from gel polish manicure. J Cosmet Dermatol. 2012;11(1):27-29. doi:10.1111/j.1473-2165.2011.00595.xGetting gel nail extensions is a process that involves hard gel built on a natural nail and cured with UV light. Then, the manicurist uses a nail form, which is a sticker that goes under the free edge (the tip) of the nail, to extend the length of the nail. The cost of gel extensions can range anywhere from $80 to $125. However, this also depends on your location and nail salon. If you’re looking for unique colors or high-end designs, that may also increase the price.Acrylics tend to be harder than gel, which also means less flexibility. They may also be more damaging to the nail, especially as it’s more difficult to remove, requiring soaking in acetone and buffing off. Too much buffing also means thinner nails over time.
While both experts caution that DIYing gel extensions at home is not the best idea (they recommend letting a professional do the work from adhesion to the removal process), several options and kits are available if you’d like to give it a go. If you take the DIY route, expect to spend at least an hour, if not more, and be sure to buy an all-inclusive kit with everything you’ll need. Beetles Poly Extension Gel Nail Kit ($30) comes with 48-piece nail forms, a mini lamp, top gel, base gel, a nail file, and nail extension gel in six colors. A much pricier option with less equipment, the ORLY GELFX Builder In A Bottle Intro Kit ($100) includes 100 perfect fit forms, a nail primer, top coat, the Builder in a Bottle application, two nail files, and an instructional insert. The website includes several video tutorials on how to achieve the look, and the brand touts an ”effortless, all-in-one brush on builder application” with easy-to-remove gels simply by soaking them off.
If applied and removed properly, gel extensions are very safe. ”They’re considered a healthier version of acrylics, especially because they don’t have the powder or harsh chemicals like methyl methacrylate and toluene,” says Seney. You just need to be sure to find a professional you trust and one who has good reviews. The only prerequisite is that your nails can’t be bitten to the quick. ”For a gel extension, your nail needs to have a little length, not a ton but just a bit,” says Davis. ”If your nails are too short, there isn’t anything for the extension to stick to.”
The difference between acrylics and gel estensions lies in the polymerization process, ease of removal, and density. ”The process of using gel is definitely quicker. There are no strong odors, and you won’t have the hassle of filing or dealing with dust,” explains Seney. ”With acrylic nails, you have to mix a liquid called monomer and a powder (polymer) to mold the artificial nail.”
Builder gel may not feel as strong as acrylic nails but it has more flexibility. This means builder gel nails are less likely to break if you hit them on a hard surface. Acrylic and hard gel are a pretty even match in terms of strength, although hard gel has more flexibility so it’s less likely to crack. While it’s good to have strong nails, especially if you’re using nail extensions or tips, a polish with some flexibility is more durable to wear and tear and less damaging if you break a nail.
Builder gel lasts about two to three weeks. Due to its strong, viscous texture, it’s less prone to lifting, like regular gel nail polish. Builder gel and hard gel can be filled so you don’t need a new set every time you get your nails done. A fill focuses on the outgrowth at the base of your nail, filling in the empty space with new builder gel to make your manicure look fresh.Typically, a bead of builder gel is applied and gently glided down the nail with the brush to build up the apex of your nail (the highest point on your nail bed) to add strength. While traditional nail polish is applied with long vertical strokes, builder gel goes on with small, horizontal strokes to build up the polish across the entire nail.
Builder gel application is different from traditional nail polish. The nails are cleaned, shaped and buffed to helps the base coat adhere to the nail, as with other nail applications. You’ll also want to clean up your cuticles before applying your builder gel.
Both builder gel in a bottle and hard gel are applied to the nail and cured with a UV nail lamp. UV nail lamps can emit UV rays that can damage the skin on your hands, just like a sunburn. To avoid this, apply an SPF 30 or greater, like the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Invisible UV Fluid, to your hands and fingers before your gel manicure.Hard gel can be damaging because it has to be filed off, which can cause serious trauma to your nails if it’s done incorrectly. Acrylic has the biggest potential of damaging natural nails based on its application with excess nail filing that can thin the natural nails and its rigid shell that can break your nails if you hit your hand on something.Hard gel is another type of builder gel that typically comes in a pot and creates a rigid layer over the nail. It comes in many different colors and finishes. The biggest difference between builder gel in a bottle and hard gel is that the latter has to be filed off, it cannot be soaked off. Hard gel is similar to acrylic, it feels strong on the nail, though hard gel has more flexibility so it’s less likely to crack.Builder gel, gel extensions, polygel, acrylic nails and any type of nail enhancement can be damaging if applied and removed incorrectly. Ultimately, the right technique is what will keep your natural nails in good condition and that comes down to finding the right nail tech with proper education.
Builder gel comes in different colors but clear, nude and light pink shades are the most common shades in comes in. Builder gel can be used like your average nail polish, or you can apply a layer to strengthen your nails (called an overlay) and top it off with a traditional gel or nail polish to add color or trendy nail art. It can also be used to create short gel extensions or as a glue to bond pre-shaped gel extensions to the natural nail.Typically, builder gel in a bottle is a thick gel that adds strength to the nails or nail enhancements and can be soaked off with acetone. Builder gel in a bottle is a softer gel, but it creates a much stronger overlay on the nails than traditional gel nail polish so it’s great for helping your natural nails grow. If you’re a nail-biter, it’s also a sound option to protect your nails because it’s too rigid to bite through.
Most builder gel in a bottle formulas can be soaked off with foil, acetone and cotton, just like your average gel polish. Hard gel nail polish must be filed off. Typically hard gel will come in a pot so that can help to differentiate between the two. Your BIAB nails can be removed at home whereas hard gel nails should be removed at the salon by a professional since they need to be filed off. If you know how to properly use an e-file (an electronic nail file) without damaging your natural nails, then you can carefully attempt to remove hard gel at home.Whether builder gel or acrylic is better is going to be entirely based on your personal preference. Builder gel in a bottle is less damaging to your natural nails than acrylic because it creates a thin coat on your nails that allows them to remain healthy and grow while you wear the polish. If you’re looking to grow and strengthen your natural nails, builder gel in a bottle is the best choice.
