Depending upon how you intend to use your car, we would suggest you look for a 1.6 D2 diesel as the best all-round engine choice for earlier cars and the 2.0 D2 for post-2015 models. Both manage to motivate the V40 with adequate pace, although it’s not quite as effortlessly as those of the Audi A3 or Volkswagen Golf. The D3 and D4 make the V40 surprisingly fast, but they start becoming a bit too expensive to buy and run when compared with the D2.

Du får olika växellådor i D2 eller D3 oavsett om du väljer manuell eller automat. Alla fyra alternativ är dock 6-växlade, men det kan ju vara intressant att jämföra utväxlingen mellan de två manuella alternativen.
How much power does a Volvo V40 D2 engine have?
This engine produces a maximum power of 120 PS (118 bhp – 88 kW) at 3750 rpm and a maximum torque of 280 Nm (206 lb.
The next time you start your car, pay close attention to the lights in your dashboard. All of the lights should turn on for a few seconds when you first start your vehicle. When these lights turn on, look for an AWD light. In some vehicles, the AWD light is simply an illuminated “AWD.” But in other cars, the icon features two car axles with the word “LOCK” underneath them. If you see this light turn on when you start your car, this means your vehicle has an AWD system.
An AWD system is capable of sending power to all four wheels of the vehicle. Most AWD systems are designed to primarily send engine power to either the front or rear wheels. However, if one set of wheels starts to lose traction, the system will automatically send power to the other set of wheels. No driver input is required to operate this system.
For example, a 4WD drivetrain system is used to help vehicles safely travel over boulders, through deep water, and in other off-roading situations. For this reason, most vehicles that are designed for off-road use are built with 4WD drivetrains. If you own a Jeep that is primarily used for off-roading adventures, it’s very likely that the vehicle has 4WD rather than AWD.
You can also perform a VIN search to learn about your vehicle’s features, including its drivetrain system. To obtain this information, you can either pay for a vehicle history report or conduct a free search using one of the many tools available online.
The AWD lock button typically looks similar to the AWD light dashboard. That means it will either say “AWD” or feature two car axles with the word “LOCK” underneath it. If you spot an AWD button on your center console, this means your car has an AWD system.Every vehicle is equipped with a drivetrain, which is a system that sends power from the engine to the wheels. One type of draintrain system is known as all-wheel drive, or AWD. There are several different types of drivetrain systems, including AWD, four-wheel drive (4WD), front-wheel drive (FWD), and rear-wheel drive (RWD). Knowing what type of drivetrain system is typically used on the type of vehicle you have may help you determine whether your vehicle has AWD. For example, the owner’s manual for the Ford Edge SUV has a section called “All-Wheel Drive.” This section includes a brief explanation on how AWD works, safety precautions, and the limitations of this type of drivetrain system. For example, if you are buying a used vehicle from a private party, you can use the VIN to pull up the vehicle history report, which will tell you more about the vehicle’s history of accidents, repairs, and previous owners. If you take your vehicle in for repairs, the auto shop will most likely use the VIN to access information about the vehicle’s transmission, engine, and repair history.Every vehicle has a unique vehicle identification number, or VIN. Think of the VIN as an automotive fingerprint–no two vehicles have the same one. The VIN is a string of 17 numbers and letters that can be found on the driver’s side of the windshield. If you can’t read the VIN on the dashboard, check your vehicle registration instead.
If your owner’s manual includes a section on AWD, it’s likely that your car has this type of drivetrain system. But this is not always the case. For instance, the Ford Edge owner’s manual includes a note that not all Ford Edge vehicles are equipped with AWD. So, if you see this section in your owner’s manual, it could simply mean that your vehicle could come with AWD. But if you did not pay extra for this optional feature, your vehicle may not be equipped with it.
It’s important to know what type of drivetrain your vehicle has, especially if you are purchasing a new part for your car, going on a road trip, performing maintenance on your vehicle, planning on getting your car towed, or selling it to a private party. The next method you can use to determine whether your car has AWD is checking the owner’s manual. The type of drivetrain system your vehicle has should be listed in the “Features” section of the owner’s manual. But if you can’t find it there, skim through the rest of the owner’s manual to look for other references of the drivetrain system.
Simply enter your VIN into the search bar to get started. The tool will then generate information about your vehicle. There should be a section of the report titled “Vehicle Specifications.” In this section, look for the “drive type” or “drivetrain” header. If it says AWD, this means your vehicle has an AWD system. Pulling up information using your VIN or looking under your vehicle are the best ways to determine if your car has AWD. However, there are other clues you can look for to confirm that your car has AWD. On the other hand, if your car was made before 1990, chances are it has a RWD drivetrain. Prior to the 1990s, RWD was the most common type of drivetrain system in passenger vehicles.
To do this, head to the back of your vehicle. See if your vehicle has a rear differential, which is about the size of a pumpkin. The rear differential should be located right in the middle of the two rear wheels. There should also be one metal rod extending from each side of the rear differential. Each of these rods should connect the rear differential to one of the rear wheels. If you see this configuration, this means your vehicle sends power to your rear wheels.Start with the front wheels of your car. Find the wheel knuckle, which is located on the backside of each wheel. Then, look for a metal rod that attaches in the center of the wheel knuckle. There should be a cone-shaped piece of rubber where the metal rod meets the wheel. If you see this shaft, this means your vehicle sends power to your front wheels, so you can eliminate the possibility that your vehicle is RWD.Now, you know your vehicle sends power to both the front and rear wheels, so it is either AWD or 4WD. To figure out which one it is, pop the hood and locate the engine. If your engine is transversely mounted, which means it sits sideways under your hood, this means your vehicle is AWD, not 4WD.You should also take a look around the interior of your vehicle, specifically the center console. Some AWD vehicles have AWD lock buttons that allow the driver to manually keep the AWD system on to maximize traction when climbing steep hills or driving on muddy or sandy roads.A good place to start is the table of contents. Many owner’s manuals include sections that are dedicated solely to information on the vehicle’s drivetrain.

An issue with some software on cars built between 25 November 2013 and 10 March 2014 may result in the left (nearside) rear tail light failing. The driver should see a warning light appear in the instrument cluster informing them of the problem if it occurs.
There have been a few recalls regarding airbags that might not deploy correctly in a collision. The first is for the driver’s airbag on V40s made between 25 April 2016 and 15 May 2016, while the second affects examples built between 25 August 2016 and 5 October 2016. Contact your local Volvo dealer to make sure your car has had the relevant remedial work carried out.
When you go to view a Volvo V40, you should check that all the door locks work as they should because, according to the What Car? Reliability Survey there have been a number of owners reporting failures. If they fail, it could become an expensive fix once the three-year/60,000 mile warranty has expired.
Owners have also commented upon issues with bodywork and trim, so make sure that all the panels fit as they should. When you test-drive the car, make sure you try out all the electrical items to make sure they all work properly and keep an eye on the driver information screen in the middle of the speedometer for any error messages that may pop up.
A fuel hose fitted to some models has been found to crack up from the inside, which could lead to a fuel leak if not fixed. This applies to cars built between 11 April 2015 and 30 March 2016, and a Volvo dealer will be able to tell you if your car is affected or not.
It has been identified that there could be a coolant leak during the warm-up process of some V40s built between 6 February 2012 and 21 April 2015 that could result in an engine fire in extreme circumstances. Check with a Volvo dealer to make sure your car isn’t affected by this.

The Volvo Engine Architecture (VEA) is a family of straight-three and straight-four automobile petrol and diesel engines produced by Volvo Cars in Skövde, Sweden, since 2013, Zhangjiakou, China since 2016 and Tanjung Malim, Malaysia since 2022 by Proton. Volvo markets all engines under the Drive–E designation, while Geely groups the three-cylinder variants with its other engines under the G-power name. These engines are some of the few ever put into production as twincharged engines, in the company of the Lancia Delta Integrale and concept Jaguar CX-75. In December 2014, Volvo introduced the first hybrid variant of a VEA engine with the launch of the XC90 T8. It uses an electric rear axle drive (ERAD) for both electric propulsion and AWD capabilities. Hybrid engines are equipped with a crankshaft integrated starter generator (CISG) that is used to start the engine, capture otherwise lost energy when slowing down and reduce lag at low rpm by acting as an additional supercharger. Volvo refers to this type of hybrid implementation as Twin Engine. In the newly released S60 III and V60 II, and for all other models from and including model year 2020, it delivers 303 PS (223 kW; 299 hp) at 6000 rpm and 400 N⋅m (300 lb⋅ft) of torque between 2200–4800 rpm. Until the end of 2015, nearly all other engines had been phased out, with only a few non VEA engines remaining in production for select models. Volvo nearly completed the phaseout in 2016 with only two variants of the five-cylinder diesel remaining in production for the 60-series models.
The D4204T16 (72) delivers 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) at 3750 rpm and 320 N⋅m (240 lb⋅ft) of torque between 1750–3000 rpm. The compression ratio was changed to 16.0:1. Single turbocharger.

The engine codes consist of a series of letters and digits. The actual, broadly used engine code is 7 or 8 characters long. Hybrid models can have a second engine code that is 7 characters long, mild hybrids engine codes are 6 characters long. Different, more general engine codes are used for some certification and approval documents and are 6 to 8 characters long. An additional 2 characters are used to identify each specific engine variant with an MP or HP suffix to differentiate performance.
The D4204T20 (78) delivers 120 PS (88 kW; 118 hp) at 3750 rpm and 280 N⋅m (210 lb⋅ft) of torque between 1500–2250 rpm. Engine variant for cars equipped with an automatic gearbox. Single turbocharger. With the introduction of Volvo’s new flagship sedan in 2016, the S90, the PowerPulse anti-lag system for the top of the range diesel engines was unveiled. It uses a small tank of compressed air that can instantaneously be released into the turbocharger to help with spool up, thereby reducing turbo lag.
Which Volvo V40 engine is best?
Depending upon how you intend to use your car, we would suggest you look for a 1.6 D2 diesel as the best all-round engine choice for earlier cars and the 2.0 D2 for post-2015 models. Both manage to motivate the V40 with adequate pace, although it’s not quite as effortlessly as those of the Audi A3 or Volkswagen Golf.
This engine was available with the M66 gearbox until model year 2017, afterwards it was available with the M76 gearbox. Single turbocharger.Development of the new engine family began in 2006, with the decision to only produce four-cylinder engines being finalised in 2007. The intention was to produce smaller, more economical and environmentally friendly engines that would be fitted to every Volvo model. In 2008 Volvo began to upgrade its Skövde engine plant and invested roughly 2 billion SEK into development and tooling for the VEA.
Is the Volvo D2 a good engine?
Volvo’s latest D2 engine is pretty rattly at idle, but it smooths out at speed and it delivers decent performance. The 148bhp D3 is the pick of the range as it has the best spread of torque (320Nm from 1,750-3,000rpm).
It was replaced by the newer engine B3154T7 which retains the same ID code of 11 but not 14; automatic was changed to B3154T2 which retains the same ID code of 15.The B3154T7 (11) delivers 163 PS (120 kW; 161 hp) at 5500 rpm and 265 N⋅m (195 lb⋅ft) of torque between 1850–3000 rpm. Engine variant for cars equipped with a manual gearbox. Single turbocharger.
What type of automatic gearbox is in Volvo V40?
Geartronic The automatic gearbox Geartronic has a hydraulic torque converter that transfers power from engine to gearbox.
The B4204T41 delivers 245 PS (180 kW; 242 hp) at 5500 rpm and 350 N⋅m (260 lb⋅ft) of torque between 1500–4800 rpm. The compression ratio was changed to 8.6:1. Single turbocharger.Due to stricter emissions laws, additional and improved emissions control equipment was introduced, beginning in the second half of 2017 for the 2018 model year. Diesel engines gained a SCR-catalyst to decrease NOx emissions, petrol engines received a particle filter. These changes are referred to as VEA GEN2. This improved the emissions rating to Euro 6c and for some engines to Euro 6d-TEMP. The improvements were rolled out in stages and some engines, particularly the hybrid variants, remained in Euro 6 configuration until the second quarter of 2018. By model year 2019 all engines had been updated to achieve Euro 6d-TEMP certification, with some engines getting discontinued. All diesel engines are now equipped with Ad-Blue and all petrol engines with a particle filter.
Who makes Volvo D2 engines?
The Volvo Engine Architecture (VEA) is a family of straight-three and straight-four automobile petrol and diesel engines produced by Volvo Cars in Skövde, Sweden, since 2013, Zhangjiakou, China since 2016 and Tanjung Malim, Malaysia since 2022 by Proton.
The B4204T43 (A0) delivers 367 PS (270 kW; 362 hp) at 6000 rpm and 470 N⋅m (350 lb⋅ft) of torque between 3100–5100 rpm. The compression ratio was changed to 8.6:1. Turbocharger and supercharger.Volvo began testing of three-cylinder variants in mid 2014, it had been planned to introduce these engines in 2015. With their smaller capacity and less power they were meant to be used as base engines. In 2015 no three-cylinder engines were released, instead four-cylinder variants with 1.5 L capacity were introduced as base engines on some models. In the second half of 2017, the first production VEA three-cylinder engine was released with the debut of the LEVC TX, where it is used as a range extender. The first Volvo three-cylinder VEA was slated for introduction in 2018 for the XC40 under the T3 engine designation, however it saw only limited release. The B3154T2 (15) delivers 163 PS (120 kW; 161 hp) at 5500 rpm and 265 N⋅m (195 lb⋅ft) of torque between 1500–3000 rpm. Engine variant for cars equipped with an automatic gearbox. Single turbocharger. The B4204T47 (AC) delivers 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) at 4700 rpm and 300 N⋅m (220 lb⋅ft) of torque between 1400–4000 rpm. The compression ratio was changed to 11.3:1. Single turbocharger. The B3154T is usually only referred to as range extender. It delivers 82 PS (60 kW; 81 hp) at 4000 rpm and 255 N⋅m (188 lb⋅ft). When running it only recharges the high voltage battery, thus functioning as a range extender giving approx. 300 miles of additional range. Single turbocharger. The D420T8 / D4204T8 (K5) delivers 197 PS (145 kW; 194 hp) at 4000 rpm and 420 N⋅m (310 lb⋅ft) of torque between 1750–2750 rpm. Don’t be fooled by those rough and tough looks: the V40 Cross Country Edition isn’t a proper off-roader. In fact, it doesn’t even have four-wheel drive
The boot is also a disappointment. Not only is its 324-litre capacity small compared to other hatchbacks, it’s far smaller than in SUV-style estates, such as the Skoda Octavia Scout or Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.
In terms of list price, the Volvo V40 Cross Country Edition costs the same as the equivalent R-Design model and comes pretty well equipped. Then, as with other V40s, you can add some attractive option packs on top. These include the Winter pack (with heated seats and windscreen) and the Xenium pack, which includes electric front seats, a panoramic sunroof and an automatic parking system. There’s also the Intellisafe Pro pack, which brings lots of extra safety features, such as Adaptive Cruise Control, a Blind Spot Information system and Pedestrian and cyclist detection.
Is Volvo V40 D2 cross country 4 wheel drive?
Not only is its 324-litre capacity small compared to other hatchbacks, it’s far smaller than in SUV-style estates, such as the Skoda Octavia Scout or Volkswagen Golf Alltrack. Also unlike those models, the V40 Cross Country Edition is not available with four-wheel drive.
Compared with those other versions of the V40, this Cross Country Edition is available with a much smaller range of engines – just the D3 diesel and T3 petrol. The former comes with either a manual or an automatic gearbox, but the latter is only available with an automatic gearbox.
Inside, there’s precious little difference between the Volvo V40 Cross Country Edition and other V40s, but that’s no bad thing. It feels very well built, is generally easy to use and you’ll have no problem getting comfortable. That’s not just because of the wide range of adjustment on the seats, but also because of the seats themselves are extremely supportive.
The two engines offer similar performance on paper, but the diesel is stronger at low revs, which makes it feel easier and quicker to respond in everyday traffic. It’s considerably more economical, too, so will make much more sense than the petrol-engined car if you do a high mileage each year. The Volvo V40 Cross Country is essentially a beefed-up version of the standard V40, with a few SUV-inspired styling tweaks and a raised ride height. As such, you might consider it as an alternative to models like the Skoda Octavia Scout and Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.
Overall, though, the V40 Cross Country is average at best. There are better-driving and more spacious hatchbacks than the V40; and, if you want a mainstream car with a hint of SUV about it, the Golf or Octavia are better places to spend your money. Also unlike those models, the V40 Cross Country Edition is not available with four-wheel drive. In fact, despite the SUV-ilke styling and extra ground clearance, it’s most at home on the road – and on the motorway, in particular, where it’s very quiet inside.
If the seats in the back aren’t quite as comfortable as those up front, they are still pretty good. Trouble is, there’s not much space back there: it can feel tight for taller adults and the small rear windows mean it can feel more claustrophobic than it actually is.

Admittedly, the firm set-up stops the car’s body rolling too much in the corners, but the steering gives you little idea of how much grip the front wheels have. Essentially, the Cross Country – like all V40s – is showing the age of its basic design and more modern cars are considerably better to drive.
To be able to change gear with the steering wheel paddles they must first be activated. This is by means of pulling one of the paddles toward the steering wheel – the combined instrument panel then changes indication from ”D” to a figure, which indicates the current gear. The Sport programme provides sportier characteristics and allows higher engine speed for the gears. At the same time it responds more quickly to acceleration. During active driving, the use of a lower gear is prioritised, leading to a delayed upshift.
If the steering wheel paddles are not used then they are deactivated after a short time – this is indicated when the combined instrument panel switches indication, from the figure for the current gear back to ”D”.
Automatic gear positions are indicated on the right of the combined instrument panel. (Only one marker is illuminated at a time – the one showing the current gear selector position.)
The manual gear position is reached by moving the lever to the side from position D to the end position at ”+/-”. The combined instrument panel’s symbol ”+/-” changes colour from WHITE to ORANGE and the digits 1, 2, 3 etc. are displayed in a box which corresponds to the gear that has just been selected.
In order to be able to move the gear selector from the N position to another gear position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the key position must be II.Geartronic automatically shifts down if the driver allows the speed to decrease lower than a level suitable for the selected gear, in order to avoid jerking and stalling. Geartronic does not permit downshifting/kick-down which would result in an engine speed high enough to damage the engine. Nothing happens if the driver still tries to shift down in this way at high engine speed – the original gear remains engaged. When kick-down is activated the car can change one or more gears at a time depending on engine speed. The car changes up when the engine reaches its maximum speed in order to prevent damage to the engine.f the gearbox has a Sport programme then the gearbox will only become manual after the lever has been moved forwards or backwards in its ”+/-” position. The combined instrument panel then shifts the indication from S to show which of the gears 1, 2, 3 etc. is engaged. D is the normal driving position. Shifting up and down takes place automatically based on the level of acceleration and speed. The car must be stationary when the gear selector is moved to position D from position R. When the accelerator pedal is pressed all the way to the floor (beyond the position normally regarded as full acceleration) a lower gear is immediately engaged. This is known as kick-down.
